Investigators say an Otter Tail County deputy was under the influence of the powerful painkiller fentanyl while involved in a high-speed chase that ended in a deadly crash last fall.

Deputy Kelly Backman, 43, of Fergus Falls, has been charged with misconduct by a public officer and driving while intoxicated in the crash that killed a couple in Fergus Falls. Backman was also charged with fourth-degree DWI in connection to the chase.  

The chase involved a suspect named Cody Freitag.  Freitag crashed into the vehicle of  Steven J. Christianson, 72, and Diane L. Christianson, 71, both of Fergus Falls. The two were killed in the crash..

If convicted, Beckman faces up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine for the DWI charge and up to one year in prison and/or a $3,000 fine for the misconduct charge.
