Governor Tim Walz has called out the National Guard to help the city of Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd in the hands of Minneapolis police.

Since his death, there has been demonstrations, violence, looting, and arson fires in Minneapolis sparked by the death of Floyd. In a statement, Walz says "George Floyd’s death should lead to justice and systemic change, not more death and destruction." The governor says he "will always defend the right to protest."

About 200 Minnesota State Patrol troopers are also assisting in public safety efforts "for the next several days."

On Thursday night, one of the Minneapolis Police precincts was set on fire.
