There will be extra law enforcement on Minnesota roadways leading into the Memorial Day Weekend to cut down on speeding and traffic deaths.

This news comes as officials say that preliminary numbers from the state Office of Traffic Safety show 108 unbelted drivers died on Minnesota roads in 2021.

This figure is up three from the previous year.  Officials say it is a completely preventable upward trend in the number of "unrestrained motorists who are being killed and seriously injured as a result of not putting on that seatbelt.”

Officials say the instances of reckless driving behavior coincided with the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

A statewide seat belt campaign kicks-off Monday and will run through June 5th.
